Chapter 15

Trent pressed his forehead against the door of his den, hand on the knob. Hailey’s scent hung heavy in the air. There was no clearing it away when it clung to his skin.

He’d hoped the walk back in the cold air would do something for the pounding in his head, but it’d only grown worse. His lion, too, wouldn’t let up. The beast had roared the moment Hailey slipped inside and he turned in the other direction. Each moment away lit up his brain with the pissed off aggression of his inner beast. Claws seemed to sprout from his insides, intending to rip him to shreds for staying away.

He wasn’t good for her. She wasn’t good for him. They existed in different worlds.

He couldn’t get the image of her standing at the edge of the ring out of his head. Fingers reaching through the fencing, eyes wide with concern, scent clean of any fear, she’d stayed focused on him.

She’d talked him back from death’s door. He doubted she even knew how close he’d come to snapping.

He threaded fingers through his hair and bared his teeth in a silent snarl. Fucking Jasper. Fucking past. Fuck all the terrible things shifters like him faced on a damn daily basis. Rights stripped, treated like a zoo animal. He just wanted to live his fucking life without fear of being poked or prodded.

By humans, or relatives miraculously back from the dead.

How fucking unfair fate was. Find a woman who somehow reached his inner beast, but wait, she’s human. Find his last association to his dead parents, but wait, he’s an asshole.

Trent spun away from his door. Cold snow stretched away from him. The night was too quiet. Too empty.

His lion flashed him sendings on how to fix that problem.

A raven-haired woman with a big personality, fresh mate mark on her shoulder.

Jasper offered a way out. A life without humans. A place to reconnect with his past, to find peace with the only other survivor of his childhood. Maybe even enough support for his own lions to carry on when he lost himself as he’d almost done that night.

A life without Hailey.

His lion snarled.

Trent threw open his door and strode into the light.

Hailey surged to her feet in front of the fire, eyes wild. Wood smoke and wildflowers wrapped a leash around his neck and dragged him forward.

“Trent—”

His name was the only word she was able to get out. He crossed to her, hands going right to her hips, around her back, over her ass. He dug his fingers into her thighs and lifted her up. Legs around his waist, he braced her against the nearest wall and sealed his mouth over hers.

It was a continuation of what they’d started, what Lindley had ended, what he and his lion both wanted. His blood had been up then, his body cranked out and looking for a release.

Now? Now, a dam broke open inside him, thundering emotion all around and carrying him away. Cracks had appeared
